Introducing the Hospital

The Hospital for the Treatment of Chemical Weapons Victims in Martyr Halabja is the only medical center in the Kurdistan Region that specializes in treating individuals injured by chemical weapons.

The hospital’s foundation stone was laid on March 16, 2008, and it officially opened on March 7, 2019, beginning its mission of serving chemical weapons victims throughout Kurdistan.

Currently, 928 registered patients officially visit the hospital, all with identification records. However, beyond these registered cases, the total number of individuals affected by chemical weapons who have certified medical reports confirming exposure reaches 2,390, all of whom have medical files and receive ongoing treatment.

Patients come from across the Kurdistan Region — including Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Qaradagh, Khanaqin, Dukan, the Balisan Valley, and other areas — to receive care. Every year, a number of these patients are also referred abroad for further treatment.

Approximately 80% of the hospital’s medical supplies are provided by the Halabja Pharmaceutical Company and the French organization (PUI – Première Urgence Internationale).

A dedicated team of six physicians work compassionately across various departments of the hospital.

At the time of its establishment, the “Life Organization for Human Rights” played an important role in supporting the hospital, providing full access to the medical files and documentation of chemical attack survivors.

Today, the French organization (PUI) continues to partner with and support the hospital.

We hope that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will allocate a special budget for this vital institution, as the medications needed by chemical attack survivors are extremely expensive, and most patients cannot afford them on their own.

We also appeal to humanitarian and civil society organizations operating in the Kurdistan Region to lend their support to this hospital in any way possible.

It’s worth noting that the hospital has its own oxygen plant, which supplies oxygen to all hospitals in the Halabja Governorate.

The hospital includes the following departments, which continue to serve the chemical weapons victims:

  • Pharmacy

  • Dermatology

  • Internal Medicine

  • Neurology

  • Ophthalmology (Eye Clinic)

  • Laboratory

  • Nutrition Department

  • Respiratory Therapy Unit (with specialized equipment)

  • Physical Therapy Department

  • Emergency Department

  • Surgery Department

  • Gynecology and Urology Units

  • Blood Bank

  • Oxygen Production Workshop

Each department is fully equipped with specialized instruments and resources to serve survivors of chemical weapon exposure with the care and dignity they deserve.
